A Heritage Carried Across the Caribbean
The Garifuna are a people of African and Indigenous Caribbean heritage whose ancestors were forced from the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent in the eighteenth century and established communities along the Atlantic coast of Central America.
Today, Garifuna communities live in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Their language, oral traditions, music and dance preserve knowledge, history and identity across generations.
UNESCO recognizes the language, dance and music of the Garifuna on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Drumming, dance, storytelling, foodways and community traditions remain important expressions of Garifuna cultural life.

Planning Your Isla Tropicale Port Day
A little preparation will help you decide whether to remain at Isla Tropicale, explore Roatán independently where appropriate, or reserve a shore excursion.
Isla Tropicale Is the Gateway
Isla Tropicale is Carnival's destination on Roatán and is part of the Paradise Collection by Carnival™. It is the destination formerly known as Mahogany Bay.
You can enjoy the cruise-center amenities or use your day to experience more of the island.
Payments Ashore
Carnival states that credit and debit cards are accepted at destination bars, restaurants and gift shops, while cash is recommended for some smaller vendors and the artisan market.
Sail & Sign® cards cannot be used for Isla Tropicale purchases.
What to Bring Ashore
Carnival recommends bringing your Sail & Sign® card, a beach towel, sunscreen, a phone, payment method and some cash. Water shoes, a hat and a refillable water bottle may also be useful.
Shore Excursions & Timing
Select activities with the ship's port schedule in mind. If you leave the cruise center, allow sufficient time to return through the port and board before the ship's posted all-aboard time.
Ship time and local time may not always be the same. Follow Carnival's onboard instructions for your sailing.

Isla Tropicale Checklist
- Confirm the ship's posted all-aboard time before leaving Carnival Jubilee®.
- Bring your Sail & Sign® card and any identification Carnival instructs you to carry.
- Bring sunscreen, water and other protection appropriate for a tropical port day.
- Carry a credit/debit card and some cash if you plan to make purchases ashore.
- Review the meeting location and return instructions for any reserved shore excursion.
- Allow extra return time when exploring areas beyond the Isla Tropicale cruise center.
