The mission of the Juneteenth Freedom Cruise™ is to create an engaging cultural travel experience that honors the historical significance of Juneteenth while encouraging education, reflection, celebration and community.
The cruise combines the shared experience of travel with cultural celebrations, music, themed experiences, educational opportunities and programming inspired by African American history and culture.
Our goal is not simply to commemorate a date. It is to create an environment where history can be understood, culture can be celebrated and generations can connect through meaningful shared experiences.

About Juneteenth
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and issued General Order No. 3, announcing that enslaved people in Texas were free.
The Emancipation Proclamation
President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation declared enslaved people in states and portions of states then in rebellion against the United States to be free.
The proclamation transformed the Civil War and made emancipation a central war aim, but freedom did not reach every enslaved person immediately.
The Civil War Nears Its End
Major Confederate armies surrendered during the spring of 1865, but news, military authority and enforcement did not reach every part of the former Confederacy at the same time.
Texas became especially important to the history that would later be commemorated as Juneteenth.
General Order No. 3
Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and issued General Order No. 3.
The order announced that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves were free.
June 19 subsequently became the date associated with Juneteenth celebrations.
From Galveston to a National Commemoration
Juneteenth celebrations grew from Texas traditions into observances held across the United States.
Generations have used the occasion for celebration, education, remembrance, family gatherings and reflection on the meaning of freedom.

Galveston, Texas holds a central place in Juneteenth history because it was there, on June 19, 1865, that General Order No. 3 publicly announced emancipation in Texas.

Two Important Milestones
Understanding the relationship between the Emancipation Proclamation and General Order No. 3 helps explain the historical context behind Juneteenth.
The Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and declared enslaved people in the areas covered by the proclamation to be free.
Its effect depended upon the progress and authority of the United States during the war, which is one reason emancipation was experienced differently across different places and times.
General Order No. 3
General Order No. 3 was issued in Galveston by Major General Gordon Granger.
Its announcement that enslaved people in Texas were free became the historical event commemorated on June 19 and gave rise to the observance now known as Juneteenth.

Galveston, Texas is where history and heritage meet the sea. As the Birthplace of Juneteenth, the city holds a powerful place in African American history. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers announced freedom for enslaved people in Texas, creating a legacy now commemorated nationwide.
Today, Galveston blends culture, heritage, and legacy with coastal charm. Its historic districts, museums, festivals, music and Gulf setting make it a meaningful beginning and ending to the voyage. As Carnival Jubilee® departs Galveston, guests begin the journey with an opportunity to reflect, celebrate, and sail forward in the spirit of Juneteenth.
Cozumel, Mexico
Cozumel, Mexico combines colorful reefs and Caribbean beauty with a cultural story shaped by centuries of movement throughout the region. African influences became part of Mexico’s broader history through colonial-era migration and trade, contributing to traditions in music, food and community.
For Juneteenth Freedom Cruise™ guests, Cozumel offers both recreation and cultural discovery.
